Ennui ? Balance and Motion

Based upon my love for all things psychedelia, it isn’t too surprising that I instantly liked this tune from Pittsburgh trio Ennui, a word which you likely know means “boredom”, something that I wish I had a bit more of in my life lately. But, in this case, Ennui means anything but. First, let’s take a listen to “Balance and Motion”, a tune from the soon to be released album Formation of Tides. It’s got a little bit of a modern Pink Floyd thing going on and should be a perfect tune to throw in theread more and hear the song

World Backup Day: Ad-hoc backups to the cloud & more giveaways

time-machine-logo_270.jpgHappy World Backup Day! The only safe way forward is to back up; that's why we've joined the cause for data saving with tips, techniques and giveaways all day today.

As Steve mentioned earlier today, there are lots of cloud-based backup services eager to help you protect your data while solving the onsite/offsite conundrum. A backup of uncertain status in a single location isn't much better than no backup at all -- for one thing, it gives you a sense of confidence that your data is protected when it might not be.

Getting your data tucked away with DollyDisk, Backjack, Backblaze, Mozy, Carbonite or CrashPlan may not be the fastest or cheapest approach, but sooner or later it may save your bacon. Compare and contrast plans here. (Lifehacker has a full rundown on how CrashPlan can help you sleep soundly at night, knowing your backups are solid.)

Even if you're not up for a full-on cloud backup solution (whether due to bandwidth or budget constraints), there are still some surprisingly easy ways to back up your key files in the cloud, and do it for cheap or free. All of these approaches require a bit more thinking than the automated tools above, but if you're the sort of person who makes copies of your bank statements or saves your dry cleaning receipts, then you can probably get into these habits too.

TUAW TV Live: The "keep Steve entertained" episode

Good afternoon, everyone -- it's time for another episode of TUAW TV Live.

As noted, I'm on a trip this week. Pop star gives fans an intimate look at her life in the special airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

This Sunday at 9 p.m., "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" makes its world premiere on MTV. In the special, the singer offers an intimate peek inside her world, taking fans behind the scenes of her big nightclub show in Las Vegas and chatting with MTV News correspondent Sway about her life and career.

The MTV special follows Britney as she makes her way into the studio to listen to "Big Fat Bass," produced by Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, who tells Spears, "I did some tweaking to the 'Big Fat Bass'; the bass is even bigger."

Spears later explains the difference between recording tracks versus performing them live. "When you're in the studio, you're just really focused, you're really in your head and in your ears and on the notes," she explains. "And when you're performing, it's more a connection on the outside and more of — like a tiger and more in your body."

The pop star says it's fans who fill the audience at those live shows who get her excited to perform. "When they're screaming like that, they just hype you up," she says, "and make you feel larger than life."

Spears has been a public figure since she was on the "Mickey Mouse Club" as a kid, and in 2011, she turns 30 years old. In the special, Spears admits that she wanted to be a famous performer since she sported a schoolgirl uniform in her " ... Baby One More Time" video nearly a decade and a half ago. "I think I hoped I would be [doing this]," she says. "I genuinely love what I do. This is what I love to do."

Don't miss "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" on Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Justin Bieber In Talks To Co-Star In Ashton Kutcher Buddy Flick

Bieber would reportedly play younger version of Kutcher in 'What Would Kenny Do?'
By Gil Kaufman

Justin Bieber has already notched the third-highest-grossing documentary of all time with "Never Say Never," but now the teen titan is looking at branching out into scripted moves as well.

After his well-received turns on "CSI," the Los Angeles Times reports that Bieber is close to signing on to take the lead role in the buddy comedy "What Would Kenny Do?" opposite Ashton Kutcher. An anonymous source who was briefed on the project told the paper that the film delves into the relationship between a 17-year-old and his 30-something self, with the latter to be played by Kutcher, 33.

The movie, to be produced by Kutcher's Katalyst Entertainment and Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment, will probably not get moving until next year because Bieber has touring commitments booked through 2012. Though the initial report said Bieber was "eyeing" the movie, an update posted late Wednesday clarified that the project has been under development for months "with Bieber both in mind and on board."

It wouldn't be the first time the dynamic duo has tried to hook up, coming on the heels of a reported meeting in January in which Kutcher discussed Bieber hosting a rebooted version of "Punk'd."

The "Kenny" script was originally described as an R-rated comedy about "a teenager who meets a hologram claiming to be the adult version of himself; the hologram then helps guide the teen through high school." It got a more PG-13 revision from "(500) Days of Summer" writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, who had Kutcher's successful character going back in time to help the awkward present-day Bieber.

Gameloft's NOVA 3 rumored to be built on Unreal Engine

Gameloft has announced that it has licensed the Unreal Engine for four upcoming games set to be released in 2011 and 2012.

Gameloft hasn't announced which games will be running on the Unreal Engine, but Pocket Gamer seems to believe that one of the titles slated to be released this year is the next followup to the popular, and already impressive looking, sci-fi shooters N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance and N.O.V.A. 2.

Last year, Epic Games started dropping jaws when it released Epic Citadel as a proof of concept showing off the Unreal Engine running on iOS. Epic then followed it up in December with the stunning and widely praised Infinity Blade, a game many have claimed looked as good as current generation dedicated gaming consoles. After all, it's the same engine that powers many blockbuster games, like Gears of War, Bulletstorm and BioShock 2, despite more limited hardware on iOS devices.

MobileMe rumored to get alternative payment methods

MobileMe LogoA recently-published report from Germany suggests Apple will soon add brand new functionality to MobileMe: the ability to subscribe to the suite of online services with a form of payment other than a credit card. The rumor discourages hope for MobileMe becoming a free offering.

According to macnews.de, one of its readers ran into trouble while trying to renew his subscription to MobileMe. Currently, it's practically impossible for Apple's customers to activate a subscription to the US$99 per year online service without a credit card. When the macnews.de reader, who doesn't have a credit card, explained his situation to Apple's support hotline, a support agent for the company told him, "We're currently working on offering customers alternate payment options." The support staffer could not provide any further details or a release date.

Once upon a time, customers like this macnews.de reader could walk into a store, purchase a boxed "copy" of MobileMe using their preferred payment method, bring the box home and use the included activation instructions to enable or renew their MobileMe subscriptions online. But in February, Apple discontinued shipments of boxed MobileMe activation kits, leaving customers with only one option for buying the service: online with a valid credit card. This limitation could dramatically reduce MobileMe subscriptions in countries like Germany where about 80 percent of consumers use bank transfers to complete online transactions, according to research by The Nielsen Company. If Apple wishes to continue charging customers for all or part of its online services, it would be necessary for the company to offer more payment options.

Prompted by an email from Steve Jobs promising MobileMe would "get a lot better in 2011," many speculate the service is due for a major overhaul this year. Today, Apple's suite of online services allows subscribers to publish websites and photo galleries, access ad-free IMAP email, synchronize data between Macs and devices over the internet, backup and share files online and locate lost iPhones. Rumors suggest any or all of these services will be revamped and expanded to include a "media locker" to give subscribers online access to certain content purchased from the iTunes Store. Speculators hoped Apple planned to offer MobileMe free of charge, especially after the company discontinued the service's boxed activation kits. But if Apple is exploring alternative payment options, an entirely free MobileMe seems unlikely.

'Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale' Trailer Premieres Tonight!

Sneak peeks of Brit's upcoming MTV special will air all day before full trailer airs at 7:58 p.m.
By Jocelyn Vena

All day, Britney Spears is taking over MTV. That takeover includes a trailer for MTV's upcoming special about the pop star, "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale," which will take fans inside Britney's life to see what it's like to release a highly anticipated album.

Before the trailer premieres tonight at 7:58 p.m., teasers will air throughout the day. In the sneak peeks, fans get to see Spears work on the just-released Femme Fatale, including going over final production with will.i.am on their collabo. "I did some tweaking to 'Big Fat Bass,' " the Black Eyed Peas mastermind tells Spears as she gives the song another listen.

While on the way to rehearsals for her pre-album performances — including her set this past Friday at the Palms in Las Vegas, which will be included in "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" — Spears admits to having some "jitterbugs." It is, after all, her first time back onstage since the Circus Tour.

In another intimate look at the singer's life, fans get to see Spears and her assistant as they go to Starbucks to take a minute for themselves in the hustle-and-bustle of a hectic schedule. "It's nice to have a peaceful moment just to sit down," Spears says. "It's nice to relax before the chaos."

That chaos included getting fans excited for her album release. On top of taking the stage in Vegas for a set full of pyro, shimmering bodysuits and flirty dance moves, Spears also pre-taped today's "Good Morning America" performance in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood. "I totally loved how her bustier was lit up," fan Corina Andrati excitedly told MTV News moments after Spears wrapped her three-song set. "I'm so blessed to be here."

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official 'Hollywood Tonight' remix coming to Miami Music Week.
By Akshay Bhansali

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas' Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he's most proud.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."

"Hollywood Tonight" was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie's mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.

"I will play it Miami," Chuckie revealed. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."

So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's "I Hate That You Love Me"? Well, according to the "Let the Bass Kick" producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.

"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."

Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Are you excited to hear Chuckie's remix of Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight"? Let us know in the comments below!

Mobile Life 2011 survey covers phone use habits and future trends

For the last six years, global research firm TNS has been compiling extensive reports on the usage habits of mobile phone users. Today the company announced the release of its latest work, TNS Mobile Life 2011. Based on a staggering amount of effort -- 25,000 hours of interviews with over 34,000 respondents covering 43 countries -- there's a ton of interesting data here on all sorts of things wrapped up in some attractive Flash graphics to allow you to slice and dice the data. For example, the above graph shows how various phone use cases -- email, social networking, internet and so on -- varies by time of day across different countries.

The survey shows strong brand loyalty amongst both iOS and Android users, with 51 percent and 49 percent of respondents, respectively, "very likely" to stick with their current platform in the future. I suspect this is because of the lock-in effect of the two platforms' strong app store offerings. Once you've bought a few hundred apps through iTunes or the Android Market, you have a few hundred reasons not to want to switch platforms. Indeed, a quarter of all survey participants said that content and apps for their devices are a key part of choosing a platform.

For Windows and Symbian those customer loyalty numbers were only 30 percent and 31 percent, respectively. It might be that Nokia's deal with Microsoft to switch to Windows Phone 7 might not help it as much as it hopes, although it's likely that the relatively poor customer satisfaction in the Windows camp reflects more on previous versions of Windows Mobile (which, as an owner of one, I can confirm stink out loud) than they do on the shiny new WP7.

Looking to the future, the survey sees that as usage of SMS and still photography will reach market saturation, and customer purchasing decisions will be increasingly driven by advanced features, such as access to social networks, live TV viewing and photo and video uploading, particularly in emerging markets. Indeed, the survey paints a picture of a tremendous, untapped hunger for advanced smartphones in these emerging markets, which it defines as 24 countries including most of South America, most of Africa, China and India, amongst others.

There's far more data here than I can hope to cover in this post -- if (like me) you're a data nerd, I recommend you take a long look for yourself.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Britney Spears Is A True 'Superstar,' San Francisco Drag Queens Say

'I had a great time up there,' Donna Sachet tells MTV News of opening for Brit at 'Good Morning America' show.

Britney Spears had a busy weekend. She performed for her fans in San Francisco, just days after she graced the stage in Las Vegas at the Palms, where MTV was filming her for an upcoming special.

At her San Francisco show, which was being taped for "Good Morning America," Spears had five drag queens in over-the-top costumes warm up the crowd with their sassy back-and-forth. After the performance, MTV News caught up with two of the queens, who told us it was a lot of fun opening for the femme fatale.

"As a huge Britney fan, it was amazing," Pollo Del Mar told us. "I was excited just to have Britney Spears here in San Francisco, but to participate and be a part of it was amazing."

"It was a treat," Donna Sachet added. "I had a great time up there. Five drag queens, all different types of drag, we loved it. We were complimented that Britney wanted to start with something like that."

During her set, Spears performed three tracks from Femme Fatale, out Tuesday, and Pollo gushed that the pop star did a great job.

"I thought it was amazing," Pollo said. "It shows why she's a superstar and certainly I think that the crowd response showed that she's beloved. ... The reason I love Britney Spears is throughout her career, she's shown she's human, she's fallible ... I think that makes her someone people can rally behind and love."

Spears performance featured three eye-catching costumes, complete with sequins, latex and lights. "We do get ideas from her costuming and from her dancers and her energy," Donna admitted.

Fans were equally dazzled by Spears' set. "It was amazing," a fan named Sarah told us after the show wrapped. "It was so hot! We live here in the city, and she was sexier than ever and I'd go lesbian for her. She really blew it up."

Are you planning to buy Britney's new album? Tell us in the comments!

Busta Rhymes Hopes A Tribe Called Quest Doc Shows Their 'Legacy'

'They're a milestone in hip-hop,' Bus tells Mixtape Daily of his 'Scenario' collaborators.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ade Mangum

Celebrity Favorites: Busta Rhymes

Busta Rhymes has had a VIP view on A Tribe Called Quest's career — from appearing on ATCQ's "Scenario" to Q-Tip producing material for his solo albums — and the rowdy rapper was outwardly righteous about the controversy surrounding the documentary about the Queens collective.

Bus admitted he doesn't know much about the project, but in a nod to both sides — Tip and the doc's producers — he urged that the story be fair above everything else. He called the emergence of Tribe a milestone in hip-hop that should be treated accordingly.

"I don't really know what to think about it yet 'cause I haven't seen it," he told Mixtape Daily when we caught up with him on Lil Wayne's I Am Still Music Tour stop in New York. "But the fact that a movie house and Michael Rapaport and just all the people involved, from a creative, production and executive standpoint [green-lit it], I commend them all. But I hope they represented my people right. Tribe are my brothers, they're a milestone in hip-hop [from] when they first came out and they're a milestone still and they will forever be a milestone. One thing that's the most important about Tribe to me is that the music they made is timeless. Even though those records that we classify as timeless or from the 'golden era' came out years ago, that boom-bap is unprecedented to this day.

"A lot of times when people get the opportunity to dig deep in the good and bad, for the excitement and novelty, they like to capitalize on [buzz] created as a result of highlighting the negative over the positive," Busta explained, alluding to the documentary filmmaking process. "I hope that's something that's not a reality in this situation. I just want to see — good or bad — that there's a fair balance shining the light on the existence and legacy of Tribe."

Although members of the group have spoken out publicly against doc director Rapaport, alleging business misconduct on his part, Q-Tip and company urged fans to see the completed "Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest."

"I encourage everybody still to see this film," Tip told MTV News earlier this month. "Not only because it's about us, but it's really about the hip-hop movement, man. It really, really is, that's on everything. It's a celebration not only of Tribe, but of the culture. Of what goes into making records: the ups, the downs, the switching of the times. It's a beautiful story about hip-hop. He really did a great job, and I commend him for it, still. He really did an amazing job."

Beyonce Donated Gadhafi Money To Haiti Relief Last Year

Music industry urges other stars who played for Libyan dictator's family to donate their earnings.
By Gil Kaufman

Just days after singer Nelly Furtado announced that she planned to donate to charity money she received for playing a concert for the family of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, a spokesperson for Beyoncé said that the "Halo" singer had already done the same.

Documents obtained by the WikiLeaks website revealed that stars including Beyoncé, Usher and Mariah Carey had played big-paycheck gigs for Gadhafi. On Monday, Rolling Stone magazine reported that the industry was urging the stars (noting that rapper 50 Cent had also played such gigs) to return the money they earned for the concerts.

"They've done it for tons of artists," an unnamed music-business source told the magazine about lavish parties by Gadhafi's son, Muatassim, which are reportedly often "jammed" with supermodels. "Those guys are all over the world."

On Wednesday, a rep for Beyoncé — who played a New Year's Eve gig for Muatassim with Usher on the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2009 — told the Huffington Post that the singer had long ago resolved the matter.

"All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago," her publicist said. "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."

The money was donated to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of last year's devastating earthquake, and a spokesperson for the fund confirmed that it received the $1 million check in the weeks after the January 2010 earthquake.

According to her official Twitter feed, Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado confirmed on Monday that she once did a show for the dictator's family and now plans to donate the money to charity. "In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she wrote on Monday. "I am going to donate the $."

The star-studded shows were part of the extravagant lifestyle of the dictator's sons, whose splashy parties and out-of-control spending have angered their countrymen, many of whom wallow in poverty as the Gadhafi clan benefits from the country's oil riches.

iPad 2 loses water damage indicator at headphone jack

While Apple has been softening its policy on water damage for some iOS devices, any trip to the Apple Store for a repair may still entail a little anxiety about the water indicators reporting a problem -- even when you know that your device hasn't been exposed to any liquids.

Historically, Apple has checked for water damage by adding liquid contact indicators (LCIs) that change from white to red when exposed to water in the headphone jack and the 30-pin connector of iPhone, iPad and iPod devices. The LCIs are supposed to turn red only after 90 seconds of submersion, but they seem to be a little more sensitive than intended when exposed to a heavy amount of moisture.

Fleet Foxes ? The Plains/Bitter Dancer

So, as with almost every other album ever, it happened. The new Fleet Foxes album Helplessness Blues has officially leaked, much to my merriment. For whatever reason, when my most anticipated albums leak, I always feel a little more guilty about listening to them early. But I do anyway. Today, though, via the fleet foxes twitter account, which I believe is usually run by frontman Robin Pecknold, he told us that he’s happy the album leaked, but he’s just sad that the winner of the vinyl test pressing auction isn’t going to be the first personread more and hear the song

Kouta ? Sakura

Let me start out by telling you that the subject of the email that contained the link to these tunes was “sf/hawaii experimental”. Apparently Luca Young, aka Kouta, knows how to get my attention (and furthermore how to keep it). And that is appealing to my senses of warm weather and experimental tunes, two things that I just so happen to think go hand in hand. Young is a San Fran via Hawaii half-Japanese musician who is making some really nice glitchy electronic tunes that you should listen to. He’s got his 4 track Orinda EPread more and hear the song
