The last time we asked Johnny Depp about signing on for a cameo in a big-screen adaptation of "21 Jump Street," the Oscar-nominated actor said simply, "I'm in. I think it'd be pretty easy."

That one question has one of the film's stars declaring his love for MTV News.

"Thank you, so much! Thank you, I love you!" laughed Channing Tatum, who'll star alongside Jonah Hill in the upcoming project "We're going to try and do it. With every piece of us, we're going to try to do it."

Hill, who penned the script, has previously told us he has a specific cameo for Depp in mind, but Channing indicated that the original star of the '80s TV series would be able to choose from a variety of roles.

"There are a bunch of possible characters he could play," the "Dilemma" star said. "It's really his pick."

Tatum and Hill's parts are already set: They'll play undercover detectives sent back to pose as high school students. "What happens is they get caught up in the high school-ness as opposed to the police work," Hill previously told MTV News. "And whenever they get too caught up in the high school drama, police work comes in. And whenever they get too caught up in the police work, high school drama comes in."

And just for the record, neither of their characters, Tatum said, are related to characters from the original series. So Tatum won't be, say, the son of Depp's Tom Hanson.

"It's an entirely new imagination of what '21 Jump Street' is," he explained. "We're not doing a spoof whatsoever. It will be crazy characters that are in very unreal circumstances sometimes."
